Union Street Market prepares for opening; announces Union Street Tunnel mural

Fort Wayne, Indiana (November 21, 2022) – Union Street Market will open to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The Market will offer Northeast Indiana residents and visitors a unique place to eat and drink while also shopping for fresh, locally grown and produced foods.

Public art is an important part of the Electric Works and Union Street Market experience. In addition to mural panels created by local artists displayed throughout Union Street Market, a large-scale mural by Theoplis Smith will greet visitors as they enter the Union Street Tunnel, which connects the campus parking garage with the Market.

Smith’s mural is titled “Forward Synergy” and is inspired by the past, present and future of Fort Wayne and Electric Works. Smith, a local artist who also works under the name Phresh Laundry, shared his vision for the mural.

“My mural on the Union Street Tunnel at Electric Works depicts the ongoing motion of our community. We’re working every day, always looking to create bigger and better things,” Smith said. “Moving forward is what this community is all about.”

Smith’s work on the mural is underway and will be complete within the coming days. Visitors to Union Street Market will be able to enjoy public art, food and beverages, and an artisan holiday market will kick off on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Artisan Market: Holiday Edition will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through December 18, and admission is free. Nearly 30 local artists and craft vendors were selected to offer unique holiday gifts. This holiday market will provide a preview of the types of creative programming planned for Union Street Market and Electric Works in the months ahead.

Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 22, Union Street Market will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The Market will be closed Thanksgiving Day. As of Nov. 22, 2-hour free parking for visitors will be available at the new Union Street Garage, which is accessible from Broadway. More information is available at www.unionstreetmarket.org.
