Game recap from the Fort Wayne TinCaps:

TinCaps Finish Trip with Win

Peoria, Illinois (July 31, 2022) – The TinCaps concluded their nine-game road trip Sunday at Dozer Park with an 8-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs (St. Louis Cardinals affiliate). Fort Wayne split the six-game set in Central Illinois and finished July undefeated over four series.

Center fielder Robert Hassell III and right fielder Joshua Mears, MLB.com’s No. 1 and 8 San Diego Padres prospects, respectively, both homered in the victory. For each, it was their team-leading 10th long ball of the season.

The ‘Caps (14-16, 41-55) won despite trailing, 2-1, through three innings.

In the fourth, shortstop Jarryd Dale delivered a game-tying RBI single. Then Hassell went deep in the fifth to give the Summit City squad the lead. Mears’ two-run shot also plated left fielder Corey Rosier, who had tripled to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games. That made it 5-2.

Second baseman Max Ferguson hit an RBI triple, and scored himself on the play thanks to an error. Rosier wrapped up the scoring in the ninth on a run-producing groundout.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Jackson Wolf yielded just one earned run over his five innings as he struck out nine. Edwuin Bencomo (two), Ramón Pérez (one), and Seth Mayberry (one) combined for four scoreless frames of relief.

The Chiefs (13-17, 40-56) had only one hit from the fifth through the eighth inning.

Since July 4, the TinCaps won a pair of series and tied a pair of sets.

Fort Wayne opens a six-game series against the South Bend Cubs at Parkview Field on Tuesday night.
