Vilar Homers in Sunday Setback
Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 10, 2022) – Catcher Anthony Vilar hit the first home run of his professional career, but the Fort Wayne TinCaps lost to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate), 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field. This snapped the TinCaps’ three-game winning streak and resulted in a split of the six-game series.
Vilar’s homer — pulled over the right-field wall — gave the ‘Caps a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
However, in the ensuing frame, Captains right fielder Johnathan Rodriguez cranked a solo homer to tie it.
Fort Wayne (5-10, 32-49) briefly retook the lead in the sixth, as shortstop Jarryd Dale drew a bases-loaded walk.
But again, Lake County (7-8, 42-39) equalized in the next half inning on a Rodriguez long ball.
The visitors then seized a 5-2 advantage in the eighth when designated hitter Alexfri Pláñez slugged a go-ahead three-run shot. The 20-year-old is on a 21-game hitting streak, four games longer than anyone else in the Midwest League this season.
TinCaps starter Jackson Wolf didn’t allow any hits besides the Rodriguez rockets over 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven.
