TinCaps Sweep Doubleheader
Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 9, 2022) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps swept a doubleheader against the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) on Saturday night at Parkview Field in front of 6,606 fans. The ‘Caps are now on a three-game winning streak.
Fort Wayne (5-9, 32-48) was nearly no-hit in the opener, but showed no quit. The TinCaps were a strike away from going hitless against Doug Nikhazy. However, left fielder Corey Rosier recorded an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning on an 0-2 pitch. That advanced third baseman Lucas Dunn to second, after he reached on a walk. Shortstop Jarryd Dale delivered an RBI single to plate Dunn. Alaska Abney then replaced Nikhazy. Rosier scored on a passed ball to tie the game, 2-2.
Sam Keating worked out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom half, center fielder Matthew Acosta drew a bases-load walk for the win, his team’s first walk-off of the season.
TinCaps starter Robert Gasser threw six two-run innings with 10 strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the ‘Caps’ offense started earlier. First baseman Jack Stronach opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly to score Rosier, who had tripled. Later, Acosta hit a bases-clearing double that made it 4-0.
Though Lake County (6-8, 41-39) got two runs back in the third, Fort Wayne built the lead back up to four. Stronach added an RBI double in the fourth, while DH Cole Cummings crushed a solo homer in the sixth.
Ryan Bergert went the first 4 2/3 innings. Seth Mayberry struck out all four batters he faced. Ramon Perez registered the final three outs.
