Game recap from the Fort Wayne TinCaps:

Cummings Homers in Road Setback

Comstock Park, Michigan (June 30, 2022) – The TinCaps took an early lead on Thursday night at LMCU Ballpark against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate), but it wasn’t enough as Fort Wayne fell, 8-4.

First baseman Cole Cummings continued his torrid start to his TinCaps tenure after being promoted by the Padres from Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. Four batters into the game, Cummings belted a two-run home run pulled to right field. Later in the top of the first inning, catcher Brandon Valenzuela doubled in left fielder Corey Rosier, who was on base after being hit by a pitch.

Through his first three games with Fort Wayne, Cummings is 6-for-11 with a double, a homer, four RBIs, and even a stolen base.

Meanwhile, Rosier finished the night 1-for-3 as he extended his on-base streak to 14 games, making it the sixth longest active streak in the Midwest League.

However, the TinCaps (1-5, 28-44) couldn’t sustain their success for long. The Whitecaps (4-2, 35-37) responded with four runs in their half of the first, and three more in the second to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Fort Wayne got a run back in the fourth as designated hitter Agustín Ruiz provided an RBI double. But West Michigan pushed its lead back to four with a run in the seventh.
