6th-Inning Rally Fuels Fort Wayne’s Win
By Ben ShulmanFort Wayne, Indiana (June 9, 2022) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Lake County Captains, 5-4, (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) on Thursday evening at Parkview Field. A two-run bottom of the sixth inning earned Fort Wayne a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
The TinCaps trailed 4-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning after Christian Cairo scored on a wild pitch in the top half. Lucas Dunn led off the bottom with a walk before he was replaced on first by fielder’s choice from Brandon Valenzuela. Jack Stronach stepped up to plate next and smashed a 1-1 fastball down the right-field line for his sixth double in the last thirteen games. Stronach’s extra-base hit scored Valenzuela to tie the game. Olivier Basabe then came up and hit a seeing-eye popup to shallow center field. It glanced off a glove and dropped to score Stronach and give the TinCaps a 5-4 lead they preserved. Gabe Morales supported the win with 3 1/3 innings of one-run relief. Dwayne Matos came in after him with two scoreless and his first save with Fort Wayne. The TinCaps’ offense began with a bang in the first. Valenzuela hammered an 0-2 fastball over the right-field wall to give Fort Wayne an early 2-0 advantage. The TinCaps trailed 3-2 going into the fifth, but their home run leader from 2021 responded. Agustín Ruiz golfed a low and inside fastball, 388 feet, to deep right field for his second home run with Fort Wayne this year. At the time, it tied the game at 3-3, setting up the sixth inning offense later on.
