Hassell Homers, But Fort Wayne Falters

South Bend, Indiana (May 3, 2022) – Robert Hassell III hit his sixth home run of the season for the TinCaps on Friday night, but Fort Wayne lost to the South Bend Cubs, 11-2, at Four Winds Field.

Two batters into the game, the left-handed batting Hassell launched a two-run homer over the left-center field fence. The shot came off No. 5 Cubs prospect Jordan Wicks, a 22-year-old left-hander.

For the 20-year-old Hassell, who DH-ed in this game but is the team’s primary center fielder, his six homers rank tied for seventh most in the Midwest League. His .356 batting average is second best. This was his first homer of the season against a lefty. He also drew a walk on the night.

However, South Bend (18-13) controlled the game after Hassell’s homer. The Cubs tied the game, 2-2, in their half of the first. With a run in the third and another in the fourth, they led, 4-2. South Bend created separation with three more in the sixth and four in the seventh that came in on a grand slam by No. 20 Cubs prospect Yohendrick Piñango. The designated hitter also smacked a two-run homer as part of the sixth inning barrage.
