COLD AIR WAS LOCKED OUT OF OUR AREA, INSTEAD RESIDING OFF TO OUR NORTHWEST. ONLY THREE DAYS THIS MONTH REPORTED BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE DEPARTURES. DECEMBER 7TH AND 8TH (-12.7 AND -5.4 RESPECTIVELY) AND DECEMBER 22ND (-2.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.) THESE THREE COLD DAYS WERE OFFSET BY SEVERAL DAYS WITH WELL ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE HIGHEST MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 11TH AT 62 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1 DEGREE SHORT OF TYING THE RECORD OF 63 DEGREES SET IN 1949. ALTHOUGH THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE OCCURRED ON THE 11TH, THE WARMEST DAY OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 15TH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 21.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE DAY. WHILE THE RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS MISSED ON THE 15TH (THE RECORD IS 64 DEGREES SET IN 1933), THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 45 BROKE THE PREVIOUS (WARM) LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD OF 42 IN 1971. WITH THE ABOVE IN MIND, IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THIS RANKS AS THE 5TH WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES THIS MONTH WAS 38.1 DEGREES WHICH IS 7.2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS IS THE WARMEST DECEMBER SINCE 2015 (41.5 DEGREES; WARMEST ON RECORD). PRECIPITATION THIS MONTH, MAINLY RAIN, WAS COMMON WITH 4.27 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION REPORTED. THIS IS 1.80 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 14TH WETTEST DECEMBER ON RECORD. RECORD RAINFALL FELL ON DECEMBER 6TH WITH AN OBSERVED 0.86 INCHES. THIS BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 0.69 INCHES SET IN 1924. THE LACK OF SNOWFALL THIS MONTH WAS NOTABLE UNTIL THE VERY END WHEN 0.9 INCHES WAS OBSERVED ON 12/28. UNTIL THEN, THE ONLY MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OCCURRED ON 12/8 WITH A TENTH OF AN INCH REPORTED. SNOW THIS MONTH TOTALED 1.0 INCH WHICH IS 6.6 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 10TH LEAST AMOUNT OF SNOW ON RECORD FOR FORT WAYNE. THE LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD WAS IN 1931 WHEN ONLY A TRACE OF SNOW WAS REPORTED FOR THE MONTH. THE SNOWIEST DECEMBER OCCURRED IN 1914 WHEN 23.0 INCHES OF SNOW WAS RECORDED. DECEMBER 2021 WAS NOTABLE FROM A NATIONAL WEATHER PERSPECTIVE AS THERE WERE TWO DEVASTATING SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAKS. THE FIRST OCCURRED ON THE NIGHT OF DECEMBER 10TH RESULTING IN NEARLY 400 SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS. THERE WERE 66 CONFIRMED TORNADOES INCLUDING TWO SUPERCELLS WHICH TRAVELED WELL OVER 100 MILES. THIS INCLUDES THE TORNADO THE IMPACTED MAYFIELD, KY. NEXT, AN ANOMALOUSLY DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PRODUCED A SERIAL DERECHO AS IT MOVED FROM THE ROCKIES TO THE PLAINS AND INTO THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY BEGINNING ON DECEMBER 15TH. THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DERECHO PRODUCED HUNDREDS OF WIND DAMAGE REPORTS AND OVER 90 CONFIRMED TORNADOES. DUE TO THE DEEP NATURE OF THE LOW, THERE WERE WIDESPREAD SYNOPTIC WIND GUSTS OF 50 TO 70 MPH, WITH SEVERAL SITES RECORDING WIND GUSTS AS GREAT AS 90 TO 100 MPH.
