City of Fort Wayne news release:

Goshen Roundabout to Open to Traffic as Work Continues
St. Marys Closing at Goshen Thursday

(August 4, 2020) – The comprehensive Goshen Avenue improvement project moves to a new phase this Thursday, August 6. That’s when Sherman Boulevard and the roundabout that connects Sherman, Goshen and Irene Avenue will open to traffic.

As the project moves to the next phase, St. Marys and Russell Avenue will close at Goshen in order to restore those intersections and remove the temporary traffic signal. Goshen will remain open during this phase, but St. Marys and Russell will only be accessible to local traffic–those residents and business owners in the immediate area.

About the Improvement:

The Goshen Avenue project is a comprehensive project to improve motorist and pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow in an area that is near popular attractions and often becomes heavily congested.

The project, stretching from State to Cambridge Avenue, will improve traffic flow at the five-legged intersection that welcomes 18,500 vehicles each day from Goshen, Sherman and Lillian.

The addition of a dedicated center turn-lane from Sherman to Cambridge will serve nearly 50 businesses along the corridor. The improvement adds sidewalks, curbs, and ADA ramps on both sides of the street, connecting pedestrians to neighborhoods and businesses. Other enhancements include decorative LED lighting throughout the project, trees and shrubs and green infrastructure to control runoff, and an improved entrance and exit to Foellinger Theatre parking.

Goshen Avenue has a long history that’s experienced many changes over the years. In 1913, the road was known as the Lincoln Highway and was outside of the City limits. In the mid-20s, it became U.S. 33 until that route moved over to follow the Coliseum Boulevard bypass. Today, it’s an urban street with city neighborhoods, nearby schools, churches, and a business corridor.
