City of Fort Wayne and Allen County public safety at forefront of response to COVID-19
(March 20, 2020) – Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, the Allen County Board of Commissioners, Fort Wayne Police Department, Fort Wayne Fire Department, and Allen County Sheriff’s Department today highlighted how Fort Wayne and Allen County public safety divisions are at the forefront of the local response to COVID-19.
Public safety is the leading example of critical areas of service that are operating at full capacity to serve the public and those services continue. In addition, 911 services continue to operate as normal.
There are 464 Fort Wayne police officers, with 16 recruits in training, 356 Fort Wayne firefighters, 133 Allen County Sheriff’s officers, and the volunteer Allen County fire departments serving and protecting residents, neighborhoods, and businesses. All protocols, policies, and contingencies are in place to respond to all possible scenarios. In addition, the public safety entities are in constant communication with one another, the Allen County Department of Health, and several non-public safety divisions and departments that provide vital services to the public.
Residents can be assured that public safety and the health and well-being of the City and County has been and will continue to be the top priority. Staff is working around the clock to meet the needs of the community.
The public is encouraged to visit www.cityoffortwayne.org where a community resource page has been created that contains information about local government responses and other organizations that serve the public and how collectively there is help available to those who may need assistance. The public is also strongly encouraged to continue practicing social distancing, wash hands thoroughly and regularly, and limit activities in group settings.
