Game recap from the Fort Wayne TinCaps:
’Caps Come Back & Pull Away Late
South Bend, Indiana (April 26, 2019) – The TinCaps trailed the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs affiliate) by as many as four runs at Four Winds Field on Thursday night, but Fort Wayne rallied for a 12-6 win.
For the second time in three days, the ‘Caps pounded out a season-high 14 hits, as eight players in the lineup had at least one hit and nine reached base. Lead-off man Xavier Edwards and No. 2 hitter Tucupita Marcano each had three-hit games and drew a walk. While Edwards drove in a pair of runs, Marcano had three RBIs, including a solo home run — his first of the season — in the top of the first inning.
South Bend (10-10) tied the game, 1-1, in their half of the first. The Cubs put up four runs in the second to lead, 5-1.
Fort Wayne (11-9) chipped into its deficit with two runs in the third and sprung ahead with a three-run top of the fourth to retake the advantage, 6-5. That lead didn’t last long either, however, as the Cubs equalized in their half of the fourth.
The scored stayed tied, 6-6, into the seventh. TinCaps designated hitter Agustin Ruiz, who finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, and two RBIs, hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly to plate Marcano, who had doubled earlier in the frame. Then the ‘Caps broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning.
Right fielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton had a two-hit game that included a dagger of a two-out, two-run single with the bases full in the eighth that put the game seemingly out of reach at 11-6. Fort Wayne drove in half of its runs with two outs.Center fielder Jawuan Harris matched Edwards and Marcano with three runs scored. Harris was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Three TinCaps relievers — righties Jose Quezada, Carlos Belen, and Tom Colletti — combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
