(May 20, 2018) – The TinCaps extended their season-long win streak to five games with Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 win at Parkview Field over the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs). The win completed a three-game sweep over the Cubs in front of 7,012 fans.
Fort Wayne (20-22) capped off the sweep with clutch hitting in the seventh inning for the second game in a row. Earlier, South Bend (17-24) scored its run in the top of the third inning. The frame started with an infield single from Zach Davis followed by a double to left field from the bat of Chris Singleton, scoring Davis, and giving the Cubs the early 1-0 lead.
South Bend loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth as a result of two walks and a hit batter. However, left-hander Travis Radke came in and struck out the last batter, Austin Filiere, to secure the 3-1 TinCap win.
It was another solid pitching performance for the TinCaps. Starting pitcher Tom Cosgrove went 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and one run with five strikeouts. Cosgrove didn’t issue a walk.
Right-hander Caleb Boushley entered the game in the sixth inning for the home team. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out a batter. He also made a head-first diving catch on a bunt attempt by Jhonny Bethencourt in the eighth.
Sunday wrapped up a week-long homestand for Fort Wayne. The ‘Caps won six of the seven games against West Michigan and South Bend. The weekend series sweep of the Cubs was the TinCaps’ second sweep of the season.
