News release from the Indiana State Police:
FWPD and ISP Officers Involved in Shooting in Fort Wayne
(March 20, 2016) – Tonight at approximately 9:38 p.m., officers with the Fort Wayne Police and Indiana State Police Departments responded to the Auto Zone store located in the 300 block of East Rudisill Boulevard in reference to an individual armed with a gun firing shots at this location.
As officers arrived on the scene, they located an individual armed with a handgun outside the business. The suspect began fleeing on foot in a southwest direction while still armed with a handgun, and as officers pursued him, he began firing shots at the officers, at which time the officers returned gunfire.
The suspect was struck by officer’s gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. A male who was inside of the Auto Zone at the time was struck by the suspect’s initial gun fire and has been transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
This incident remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police, Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
