Brown’s Bill to Increase Local Control of Solid Waste Management Districts Passes Committee
INDIANAPOLIS (January 25, 2016) – Today, Senate Bill 366, a bill to increase local control over solid waste management districts by Indiana Third Congressional District candidate and Indiana State Senator, Liz Brown, passed the Senate Committee on Environmental Affairs.
Upon passage of Brown’s bill, local governments would have the flexibility to consider money-saving solutions for taxpayers. For example, while Brown served on the Fort Wayne City Council, the private sector introduced the city to a recycling option called, “single stream.” This partnership resulted in shared revenue for the city of Fort Wayne.
“Increasing local control over local infrastructure and utilities is something we should strive to accomplish at the Statehouse,” said Brown. “I’m thankful the Senate Committee on Environmental Affairs passed my bill on solid waste management districts so that we can be one step closer to achieving that goal. Our local governments should be empowered to choose innovative and cost-saving measures regarding their waste and recycling programs.”
Senate Bill 366 passed 6-3.
