Officer Pulls Crash Victim from Nearly Submerged SUV

(January 16, 2016) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred on Yohne Road, west of Smith Road.

At approximately 9:38 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016, an Allen County Sheriff’s Department Officer witnessed a vehicle that went off the roadway and flipped into a water filled ditch on Yohne Road. Officer Chris Amstutz relayed the information to dispatch and quickly assessed the situation.

Without hesitation, Officer Amstutz entered the frigid water and looked for ways to extricate the female driver, who was the only occupant of the SUV. Officer Amstutz retrieved an item from his patrol car, then immediately re-entered the water in an attempt to break the rear window of the SUV.

The driver, who was trapped in the vehicle, moved to the rear part of the passenger compartment as the rest of it was completely submerged in water. Officer Amstutz successfully broke out one of the SUV’s rear windows and was able to pull the driver from the vehicle.

Medics and fire personnel from the Southwest Fire District arrived on scene. They treated and released the driver. Officer Amstutz was assisted by a female passing motorist as well.

The crash remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department. This is the second type of water rescue in 10 days by an Officer with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
