USF sophomore Spencer Cowherd earns NAIA defensive weekly award
(October 5, 2015) – University of Saint Francis linebacker Spencer Cowherd has been selected NAIA national Defensive Player of the Week as well as Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the 11th-ranked Cougars 45-42 win over sixth-ranked Marian University on Sat., Oct. 3.
Cowherd (Ft. Wayne, IN / Northrop H.S.) led USF in tackles, had his first career interception for a touchdown, a fumble recovery to set up another USF TD, and one tackle-for-loss. His 12 tackles led both teams as did his eight solo tackles. It was Cowherd’s third interception this season.
This is the 91th time USF has had a conference player of the week, all under the direction of head coach Kevin Donley. Cowherd, a sophomore, is 20th different defensive player to earn the honor for USF.
The Cougars play host to Siena Heights University on Sat., Oct. 10 at noon at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium / Kevin Donley Field.
