Fort Wayne comeback falls short
DAYTON, Ohio (July 19, 2015) – The TinCaps rallied in the late innings on Sunday against the Dayton Dragons, nearly erasing a five-run deficit, but came up short, 5-4.
Fort Wayne (14-10, 46-46) fell behind 5-0 after the first four innings. Starter Ernesto Montas (L, 9-6) allowed seven hits and for just the second time this season, walked more than two batters in a game (3). Shed Long had three hits, and drove in the run in the fourth frame to increase Dayton’s (12-12, 51-43) lead to five runs.
The visitors were revived in the seventh inning. After Junior Morillo (W, 3-4) was lifted, Jose Ruiz, Henry Charles and Ruddy Giron began the frame with three straight singles against Brennan Bernardino. Franchy Cordero then doubled in two runs with a liner down the left-field line. Franmil Reyes followed with a run-scoring single and Luis Tejada followed with an RBI groundout. The TinCaps were within one run.
Colby Blueberg then tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, striking out three, but Fort Wayne failed to rally further. Aaron Cressley also threw two scoreless innings before Blueberg.
Fort Wayne gets one more crack at Dayton on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Thomas Dorminy (7-6, 3.90) starts for the TinCaps and faces Dragons starter Tyler Mahle (9-5, 2.71).
