Narrative By: Irick, A.
Incident number: 15F010493
I was dispatched with other officers to the Jared jewelry store, 4355 Coldwater Rd, in reference to a theft that had just occurred. Officers C. Reed and M. Schultz were on scene within a minute of the original call. It was learned that 2-3 male subjects exited a vehicle in the parking lot, entered the store, and smashed a few of the glass display cases that contained loose diamonds. The suspects left the hammers behind and quickly exited the store.
I was a few minutes away, and as Officer Reed was airing information, I went to the Glenbrook Mall Security office to see if they had video of the incident.
I went to the mall security office and met with Security Officer ###### #####. ######## was able to pull up the exterior camera in this area of the mall parking lot, and the camera was pointing directly at the Jared store as the incident occurred.
The video was replayed for me, and I could clearly see a white colored four door vehicle enter into the Jared parking lot. I observed three suspects exit the car, and the driver remained in the car. The suspects entered the store and the driver backed the car up and backed into a parking space near the door to prepare for the exit.
A few moments later, the perpetrators fled the store, got into the car, and drove southbound out of view.
I aired the description of the car, which appeared to be a Dodge Intrepid. A short time later, someone had called in to report that their white Dodge Intrepid had been stolen from Burlington Coat Factory a short distance
away.Glenbrook Mall Security was going to burn copies of the video that they had, and inspect the remaining cameras to see if they have any other useful video, and contact us when it is ready for pickup.
I informed Detective Forte of this information, and cleared with this report.

On January 26, 2015 at approximately 1957 hours, Officers were dispatched to 4335 Coldwater Rd at Jareds Jewelry store in reference to a theft of diamonds. I arrived at the Target store located at 3801 Coldwater Rd to assist ISP Officer J. Grant who was already watching the surveillance video.
ISP Officer Grant advised at approximately 1926 hours, he observed a dark colored suv (Jeep Patriot style) pull up in the parking lot and park. At approximately 1927 hours, there was a white 4 door vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Malibu pulled up one space away from the suv and park. The white Malibu and suv parked on the south side of the front parking lot. The vehicles parked towards the east side of the parking lot farther away from the front of the store. A short time later, he observed a newer white Buick Lucerne or Lacrosse with tinted windows and chrome rims pull up and park in the same area. He observed three individuals exit the white Buick and get into the black suv. At approximately 1942 hours, a black 4 door vehicle possibly a Honda Civic pulled up and parked in the same area. He observed a couple individuals get out of the white Malibu and get into the dark suv. At approximately 1956 hours, the stolen white Dodge Intrepid parked between the black suv and white Malibu. Several individuals got out of the stolen vehicle and got into different vehicles before all the vehicles left the Target parking lot.
The surveillance video was skipping at times and was grainy. The Target store loss prevention officer advised once the video is burned to a dvd it will be better footage. I contacted Sgt. J. Shank and advised him of the surveillance video at the Target store. Sgt. Shank advised Detective Forte would pick up the surveillance video tomorrow. I gave the Target loss prevention officer the control number and I cleared the scene.

On Monday, January 26, 2015 at approximately 2000 hours, I responded to the report of a theft that had just occurred at 4355 Coldwater Road (Jared’s). Dispatch advised the store was calling and reporting that several suspects broke the store display with a hammer and stole merchandise, fleeing from the scene.
Upon arrival, I met with store employees who had locked the door to prevent entry. Upon entry, I confirmed the information that had been provided to Dispatch, adding very little information to what had been obtained by the 911 call-taker. Officer M Schultz 1747F approximately the same time as I, so we began separating the main witnesses.
I spoke with ##############, who stated that she was working closest to the counter where the theft occurred. ####### stated that she observed three male blacks enter the store, who she observed by seeing their reflections in the glass mirror along the opposite wall. ##### stated that she spun around to greet the males, as they rounded the corner of the display case. ###### stated that two of the males pulled hammers from inside their clothing, that until now had been concealed. ###### stated that the two males with hammers proceeded to smash the display case, then all three males began grabbing merchandise and ran from the store. ##### stated that the incident happened so quickly that she really did not have an opportunity to gather much other information. After calming down for several minutes, ###### was able to tell me that all three males were between the ages of 20 and not older than 30. ####### also stated that one of the males was wearing a black hoodie, with the hood over his head. ###### stated that this particular suspect had a tattoo of some sort over his right cheekbone area. ###### was not able to tell what image was depicted. Store personnel at this point advised me that the loss was at least $#########.
I advised Sgt R Hosford of the the loss and requested that Crime Scene be sent to collect the evidence. I observed blood mixed in with the glass, as well as both hammers that had been used to break the glass case. One of the hammers was still inside the case, while the other was laying on the floor. All of this evidence was pointed out the Crime Scene Detective C Meihls.
In addition, ######## approached me about a male black subject who had been inside the store by himself, approximately 30 minutes prior to the incident. ######## stated the male had made her nervous, and had been loitering near the case that was smashed during the theft.
I provided a brief summary of what ####### had told me to Detective A Forte and stood by on the scene until relieved to do this report.
OFFICER NOTE: While assisting Detective Meihls with the display case, the glass shifted and a small fragment of glass landed in Det Meihl’s right eye. I attempted to irrigate his eye with saline solution I had in my patrol car, but was unable to dislodge the item.
