Sen. Donnelly visits HU, discusses new ag program
HUNTINGTON, Ind. (October 9, 2014) — U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., visited Huntington University’s campus today to meet with university officials about the institution’s new Institute for Agricultural Studies.
Donnelly serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee in the senate.
He met with Dr. Sherilyn Emberton, president of Huntington University; Dr. Mike Wanous, vice president for academic affairs; Vince Haupert, vice president for advancement; Jeff Mize, CEO of Ag Plus and member of HU’s Agriculture Task Force; and Ryan Warner, President of Bippus State Bank and member of the HU President’s Advisory Council on Excellence.
Launched in the fall of 2014, the Institute for Agricultural Studies at Huntington University promotes a Christian perspective on agriculture, which recognizes a responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation and to examine questions of sustainability and justice. Hallmarks of the institute include outreach to the agribusiness community, internships, connections with organizations that promote agriculture to young people such as 4-H and FFA, and opportunities for students in agricultural missions.
The institute has received a $100,000 matching grant gift from an anonymous donor, and significant progress has been made toward meeting the match goal.
The agribusiness program, which is under development, is intended to meet the growing need for agribusiness professionals and is anticipated to include concentrations in business innovation and entrepreneurship, communication and public policy, crop production, agricultural education, and ministry and missions.
