News release from the Fort Wayne Fire Department:

Neighborhood smoke detector blitz today

WHO: Fort Wayne Fire Department

WHERE: Smoke Detector Blitz Kick-off

Bridge of Grace
5100 Gaywood Drive

WHEN: Saturday, October 11, 2014, between 1-4 p.m.

WHY: The Fort Wayne Fire Department will go door-to-door Saturday afternoon checking and installing smoke detectors. Crews will canvass statistically identified high fire risk neighborhoods to check a home’s existing smoke detectors working condition and/or installing the life saving devices.

Crews from stations 2, 9, 10, 11, and 12 will be out in their territories. Zip codes included are 46802; 46803; 46806; 46805; and 46806.

“We have had great success with this program,” says Fire Education and Prevention Captain Dave Meadows. “By targeting neighborhoods whose fire occurrence is statistically high, we are able to check existing detectors to make sure they are in working order, or install these life saving devices where none are found.”

Saturday’s Neighborhood Smoke Detector Blitz is part of the Fort Wayne Fire Department’s participation in this year’s National Fire Prevention Week “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives – Test Yours Every Month” campaign.

The free smoke detectors are a part of a grant received from Firehouse Subs Foundation. For those in need of smoke detectors, but are not included in this scheduled neighborhood blitz campaign, visit the FWFD website at
