TinCaps Season Ends in Eastern Division Championship Series

EASTLAKE, Ohio (September 7, 2014) – The 2014 TinCaps season came to an end Sunday night. Fort Wayne fell in Game 2 of the Eastern Division Championship Series to the Lake County Captains, 5-4. Lake County won the best-of-three series, 2-0, and now faces the Kane County Cougars in the Midwest League Championship Series.

As they had all season long, the TinCaps played hard until the final out on Sunday. Down 4-1 with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Fort Wayne rallied to tie the game. The Captains, however, scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead and go on to win.

Dustin Peterson gave the TinCaps a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to score Fernando Perez, who had doubled. But Lake County’s Nellie Rodriguez blasted a three-run homer in the ensuing half-inning to give the Captains a 3-1 edge. Lake County increased its lead to 4-1 in the sixth on a Dorssys Paulino sacrifice fly.

John Nester doubled off Carlos Melo in the eighth to bring Fort Wayne within two as Jake Bauers scored. Ryan Miller then hit a grounder back to the mound that Melo threw wildly to first base that allowed Peterson and Nester to both score and tie the game.

This was the TinCaps’ league-high sixth consecutive postseason appearance and third year in a row in the Eastern Division Championship Series.

Fort Wayne opens the 2015 season in 214 days on the road against the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday, April 9. Opening Day at Parkview Field in 2015 is set for Sunday, April 12 at 4:05 p.m. against the Lansing Lugnuts.
