From the League of Women Voters Fort Wayne Chapter:
94th anniversary of constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote
(August 22, 2014) – August 26th is the 94th anniversary of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. The YWCA and League of Women Voters of Fort Wayne are marking this historic occasion through their ongoing work to engage and empower all voters to participate this year.
League members and the YWCA have been working on voter registration training and the registration of voters over the course of the summer.
The League, with assistance from Fifth Freedom, registered prospective voters at Taste of the Arts on August 23. This followed upon voter registration training on July 9 that was attended by 22 representatives from various local organizations. Voter registration events have also taken place at Simpson United Methodist Church.
The YWCA Northeast Indiana will host a voter registration event on August 26 at their office at 1610 Spy Run Avenue. Stop by from 8:30am to 5:00pm and register to vote. Our computer lab will be open to the public, with assistance provided, to register voters.
They will also be hosting a Voter Registration Education Class from 9:30am – 10:30am to provide new voters with general information on the voting process.
The observance of Women’s Equality Day today not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. “Join us, all are welcome as we work to further our Mission of eliminating racism and empowering women on this historic day,” says Mary Jo Hardiman, Chief Program Officer.
On August 27, voter registration training will again take place at Wunderkammer Company, 3402 Fairfield Avenue, at 6 p.m. Persons living in the 46807 zip code are particularly encouraged to come and register between 7 and 9 p.m. that evening.
“Artists are citizens, yet many are not registered and therefore outside of this key aspect of citizenship,” says Dan Swartz, Wunderkammer founder. “We believe that supporting the democratic process of voting follows with our mission of “revitalizing communities through contemporary art.”
