News release from the TinCaps:
One Run Not Enough in Return to Parkview Field
(July 23, 2014) – The TinCaps have played their best baseball at Parkview Field this season, but in their first game home in nine days Wednesday night, they were not at their best. A two-run blast in the eighth and a four-run ninth made winners of the Beloit Snappers, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series.
Working with a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning, Fort Wayne (11-20, 41-59) reliever Eric Yardley gave up a two-run blast to Tyler Marincov down the left-field line, which put the Snappers up, 2-1. The inning had been prolonged due to two errors—one by Yardley—and the longball came in a two-strike count with two outs.
Beloit (10-21, 40-61), which entered the night with the league’s second-lowest batting average, pounded out four runs on five hits in the ninth inning against the duo of Jorge Guzman and Erik Cabrera. Entering the seventh inning, the Snappers had been held to just three hits.
Their minimal offense was thanks to Fort Wayne starter Yimmi Brasoban, who turned in a career-high-tying six innings and struck out six batters while walking one. The 20-year-old retired the first seven batters he faced and had three 1-2-3 innings, leaving in line for what would have been his second win of the year. The lone run of support he was given came on a Jake Bauers groundout in the fourth.
Joe Michaud (2-0) was awarded the win for Beloit, working four scoreless innings behind Matt Stalcup, who allowed one run over five frames.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The pitching matchup pits Fort Wayne’s Cody Hebner against Beloit’s Junior Mendez. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TinCaps.com.
