Game recap from the TinCaps:
Fried Returns, TinCaps Win
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 17, 2014) – The focus for many at Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday night was on TinCaps starter Max Fried. But before the left-hander ever stepped on the mound, his teammates had given him a 4-0 lead. From there, Fried and his teammates continued to roll to a 9-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits. Fort Wayne has won two straight games and three of its last four.
Fried, 20, was making his 2014 TinCaps debut on Wednesday. He started 23 games for Fort Wayne and led the team in strikeouts a year ago, but experienced soreness in his pitching arm during the offseason and was shut down by the Padres in the spring.
The seventh overall pick in the 2012 draft appeared healthy as he retired the first four batters he faced and allowed only one run in 3 2/3 innings. Fried threw 53 pitches, giving up five hits and one walk, while striking out one.
Payton Baskette (4-4) followed Fried out of the bullpen and kept Fort Wayne’s momentum going.
Fried wasn’t the only San Diego first-round selection to impress in the win. Trea Turner — taken by the Padres with the 13th overall pick last month — hit two doubles, scored a run, and drove in his first run as a TinCap.Fort Wayne (8-17, 38-56) scored before recording an out against Adrian Houser (4-4). Turner doubled to start the game and came home when number two hitter Dustin Peterson singled up the middle for the first of his three RBI in the game. He also had a sacrifice fly and a solo home run in the ninth. Peterson has 69 RBI on the year — second most in the Midwest League.
The TinCaps had a 4-0 lead after the first half inning thanks to a run-scoring single by Jake Bauers and run-producing doubles by Ryan Miller and Ronnie Richardson. The visitors went 7-for-11 with runners in scoring position compared to Quad Cities (12-13, 47-47), which went 2-for-11 in those situations and left nine runners on base.
Fort Wayne expanded its lead to 6-0 with a pair in the fourth — the same inning the River Bandits scored their first run. The TinCaps added a pair more in the top of the seventh, while Quad Cities put up another one-run frame in the eighth.
Game two of the three-game series is Thursday night at 8:00. Yimmi Brasoban is expected to start for Fort Wayne against Andrew Thurman. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TinCaps.com.
