Game recap from the TinCaps:
Road Trip Ends With Sixth Straight Defeat
Dayton, OH (July 3, 2014) – Even with July 4th looming, the TinCaps were unable to declare independence from their losing streak. Fort Wayne fell, 3-1, Thursday night at Fifth Third Field as they were swept by the Dayton Dragons, and wrapped up their week-long road trip with one win and six straight losses.
Fort Wayne (5-9, 35-48) committed two first-inning errors that proved pivotal in the outcome of the game. In the bottom of the first with one runner on base, Dayton’s Daniel Pigott lifted a fly ball to right field that sent Franmil Reyes retreating, but he dropped the fly and was charged with an error. Dragons left fielder Jon Matthews came in to score, giving Dayton (6-9, 42-40) a 1-0 lead. River Stevens was charged with a throwing error on his ensuing relay throw, sending Pigott to third. The next batter, Phillip Ervin, grounded out to score Pigott.
The two-run first would be as much offense as was necessary to win the game. Fort Wayne did not have a baserunner over the first three innings, did not have a hit until the fourth, and scored its only run in the fifth on a Ronnie Richardson single.
Despite the offensive woes for the TinCaps, who have scored three runs in their last 28 innings, Jeffery Enloe (0-2) turned in a strong outing in his first start of the year. He gave his team five innings, allowed five hits and two unearned runs, while walking one and striking out three. Payton Baskette pitched in relief for the first time since April, giving up one run in two innings, although the run scored on a bases-loaded walk. Jason Jester pitched a scoreless eighth.
Next up is a three-game home series against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Fort Wayne has not yet announced a starter, and West Michigan is scheduled to throw Buck Farmer. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TinCaps.com and seen on XFINITY 81.
