Team’s first NBA D-League title earns praise from commissioners
(May 9, 2014) — The Allen County Board of Commissioners today took its turn to recognize the community’s latest sports champions.
At its regular legislative session, the board proclaimed May 9 “Fort Wayne Mad Ants Championship Day” in Allen County in honor of the NBA Development League franchise.
After achieving a league-best regular season record of 34 wins and 16 losses, the Mad Ants swept all three of its playoff series against the Reno Bighorns, the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Santa Cruz Warriors. The Mad Ants captured its first D-League championship in franchise history on April 26 by defeating Santa Cruz 119 to 113 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
In their proclamation, the commissioners praised the players for being outstanding role models on and off the court, the coaching staff for exhibiting exemplary leadership and guidance, and Mad Ants’ management for its positive commitment to the franchise and enriching the community through a variety of public service programs. The commissioners also encouraged residents “to congratulate the team’s players, coaches and staff and wish them every success in the future.”
Among those on hand to accept the proclamation were team president Jeff Potter and D-League Most Valuable Player and Finals MVP Ron Howard, both of whom expressed their appreciation to the commissioners and the community for the recognition the team has received.
