News release from the TinCaps:
Lugnuts Pummel TinCaps in Series Finale
Lansing, MI (May 7, 2014) – With a shot at their second series victory of the season on the line Wednesday night, the Fort Wayne TinCaps fell short in a 12-5 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium. The game was tied, 2-2, after three innings, but the Fort Wayne bullpen gave up six runs in three innings, stifling a comeback effort.
Fort Wayne (13-19) starter Coby Cowgill (2-1) fell victim to four errors during his time on the hill, as he gave up six runs—four earned–and seven hits in his five innings. Lansing (16-16) pounced for two runs in the second and four in the fourth.
The TinCaps evened the score at two in the top of the third inning, getting back-to-back RBI singles from Fernando Perez and Franmil Reyes, both hitting to left against Lugnuts starter Matt Dermody (1-0). The southpaw out of the University of Iowa allowed only those two runs in his 5 2/3 innings of work.
The game remained tied through the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth the Lugnuts exploded for four more runs, knocking Cowgill from the game. Wednesday marked the first time in four Cowgill starts that the TinCaps did not earn a win.
Fort Wayne’s bullpen fared no better, as Genison Reyes allowed two runs, and last Sunday’s starting pitcher, Bryan Verbitsky, gave up four runs in the eighth inning.
Fort Wayne journeys next to Dayton, Ohio, to open a three-game series with the second-place Dayton Dragons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and the scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Ismael Guillon for the Dragons. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
