Rousseau Centre Project “Double Win” for County
Energy efficiency initiative will save money and earns check from I&M Power
(February 11, 2014) — A building optimization project now in place at the Edwin J. Rousseau Centre is expected to reduce the building’s future energy usage by 2.4 million kilowatt hours per year — an annual savings of around $117,000.
And today, Indiana Michigan Power presented the Allen County Commissioners with a check worth nearly $55,000 as part of I&M’s Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency program.
“This is a double-win for our citizens and taxpayers,” said Commissioner Therese Brown. “Thanks to the incentive from I&M, we were basically able to complete the total project without using any county funds. In addition, we will be saving $117,000 per year in operational costs.”
The project, which included installing control dampers and CO2 censors in the 217,000 square-foot building, will help reduce energy usage by regulating the Rousseau Centre’s airflow and air temperature. The project qualified under the Retro-Commissioning Lite Program, one of I&M’s energy efficiency programs for commercial and industrial customers.
The project was undertaken by Fort Wayne-based Havel, a part of EMCOR Group, Inc., which helps manage mechanical, electrical and building automation systems for the County’s buildings.
Commissioner Brown praised the work of Dan Freck, Buildings & Grounds Maintenance Director, and Brenda Wright, Maintenance Operations Manager, for meeting with Havel to find ways to save money through increased efficiencies at the Rousseau Centre.
“Improving the operations of county government while saving taxpayer dollars is a challenge we as commissioners continually issue to our department heads,” Commissioner Brown said. “Dan and Brenda should be commended for taking the initiative on this project.”
Brown added that Havel and the county will be exploring other opportunities for reducing energy usage and costs in other county-owned buildings.
