News release from Fort Wayne Community Schools:

National PTA Recognizes Northrop as First “School of Excellence” Nationwide

(November 18, 2013) – National PTA President Otha Thornton will present the “School of Excellence” banner to Northrop High School during special celebration at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

National PTA has recognized Northrop and Northrop PTSA as the first “School of Excellence” nationwide for their achievement in building effective family-school partnerships. More than 40 years of research shows that when families and schools work together, student achievement increases, schools improve and the fabric of entire communities grows stronger. National PTA launched its “School of Excellence” program to help PTAs across the country strengthen family-school partnerships and make measurable progress together in the areas of education, health and safety, and arts and cultural exploration. Being recognized as a National PTA “School of Excellence” demonstrates a school and PTA’s commitment to working together to ensure all families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success and school improvement.

In addition to being honored as the first National PTA “School of Excellence,” Northrop PTSA also was recognized by National PTA with the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Family-School Partnership Award for 2013. The award honors PTAs that have put strong practices into place to involve parents and families into the lives of their schools. Northrop PTSA was selected to receive the award from PTAs across the country.

The “School of Excellence” banner presentation will be held prior to the Northrop PTSA College and Career Night, which will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. at Northrop.
