Northrop PTSA Hosts Third Annual College & Career Night
(November 13, 2013) – The Northrop High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is hosting its third annual College & Career Night from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Northrop High School, 7001 Coldwater Road. The free event is open to all middle and high school students and their families.
In attendance will be at least 15 colleges and universities, including the University of Notre Dame and West Point; 15 employers, including branches of the Armed Services, ITT Exelis, Parkview and Raytheon; and several local community organizations. For a full list of organizations, visit the Northrop PTSA Facebook page.
“Northrop PTSA feels it is vital that we hold a College & Career program to help parents understand the college process and how it will affect their students,” PTSA Co-President Kathie Green said. “We want students to have an opportunity to explore options and talk to people who can help them get focused on what it takes to be employable. With unemployment in our area at just over 7 percent, disproportionately affecting students, our thought is to do anything we can to encourage students to explore college as an option and to offer alternative career paths that they can pursue. This is also a great opportunity for middle school students to explore what they need to do to get focused for high school and what classes to take for their future.”
In addition to information from colleges and employers, students and parents can attend break-out sessions on various topics, including financial aid, scholarships, dual credits, graduation requirements, how to apply to college, Common Core Standards and more.
Door prizes for students will be awarded at the end of the evening including a Kindle Fire donated by Exelis, Inc.
