September UC2 Presents: The March on Washington 50 Years On
(August 20, 2013) — August 28, 2013, marks 50 years since the momentous March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) College of Arts and Sciences’ University Community Conversation (UC²) Series is proud to present “The March on Washington 50 Years On: Fort Wayne Echoes of Dr. King’s Dream” as the next UC² lecture. The event will take place on the anniversary date: Wednesday, August 28, at 7 p.m. in Walb Ballroom, Room 126.
Join UC² and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) as the 50th anniversary of this event is marked by welcoming members of the community with a direct connection to the great march. Panelists will engage in a discussion with faculty and students about the “greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.”
The lecture will be moderated by Deborah Godwin-Starks, continuing lecturer, Department of Communication, and executive director, Quasi Inc. Stellar Women on the Move, WQSW-LP 100.5 FM.

- Rev. Bill McGill, pastor, Imani Baptist Temple
- Glynn Hines, city councilman, 6th District, Fort Wayne
- Larry Lee, president, Leepoxy Plastics Inc.
“In the 50 years since the late Dr. Martin Luther King gave his historic and what has come to be known as the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech at the March on Washington, I believe it’s important to revisit the topics of non-violence, economic empowerment, and racial equality in America,” said Godwin-Starks. “These are important attributes that still defend Dr. King’s influence on society today and are worthy of discussion.”
The theme of the 2013 UC² lecture series is “The Nation.” Each presentation explores a different aspect of the many interpretations of the Nation, looking at themes such as immigration, education, and history. All lectures are free and open to the public.
