Fort Wayne evens series with Quad Cities

(July 18, 2013) – Behind three runs batted in from Diego Goris, who hit his third home run of the year, the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits, 8-3, Thursday night at Parkview Field. Max Fried earned a victory throwing five innings and striking out five batters.

Quad Cities (14-11, 52-42), for the second straight night, notched the game’s first run. Teoscar Hernandez singled up the middle to begin the game, and two batters later, was singled home by the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, Carlos Correa. Fort Wayne (10-16, 53-42) had Mallex Smith and Diego Goris to answer in the bottom of the first. Smith was hit by a pitch, stole both second and third, and scored on a Goris sacrifice fly, which was one of three sacrifice flies in the game for the TinCaps.

The River Bandits’ Bobby Borchering, who was a member of the 2010 South Bend Silver Hawks, hit a solo home run off of Fried (4-4) to lead off the second inning, making it 2-1 in favor of the visitors from Iowa. That was the last run allowed by Fried, who walked just one batter in his winning effort.

In the third inning the TinCaps matched power with power on a two-run home run from Goris.

It was his first home run since June 24th, which also came at Parkview Field. The TinCaps again tallied two in the fifth inning, with the recently-returned Gabriel Quintana knocking in a run, and Chris Burke following suit, extending the lead to 5-2.

Maxx Tissenbaum provided a sacrifice fly for a run in the seventh, while Rodney Daal and Brian Adams each chipped in with two-out run-scoring hits in the eighth. Six of the nine starting position players for Fort Wayne drove in a run. Quad Cities starter Vincent Velasquez (6-4) took the loss, while Chris Nunn (7) earned the save for the TinCaps.

Friday’s rubber match features Fort Wayne’s Matthew Shepherd as the scheduled starter against the River Bandits’ Mark Appel, the top overall selection in the 2013 draft by the Houston Astros. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
