News release from the TinCaps:
Burke’s Blast Not Enough In Loss To South Bend
(June 22, 2013) – The TinCaps dropped the rubber-game of their three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks, 9-1, Saturday night at a sold-out Parkview Field. Fort Wayne third baseman Chris Burke’s solo home run provided the only run of the game for the home team.
South Bend (2-1, 47-26) scored in five of its nine trips to the plate, including one run in the opening half inning against Fort Wayne (1-2, 45-28) starter Max Fried (2-2). The Silver Hawks added two more in the second, and then put the game seemingly out of reach with three runs in the third to claim a 6-0 lead.
Center fielder Breland Almadova and right fielder Mike Lang highlighted the offense for South Bend, as they both produced three hits and scored four combined runs. Meanwhile, Catcher Ronnie Freeman and shortstop Pedro Ruiz both picked up two RBI.
Burke’s home run for the TinCaps came in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the third baseman’s first home run for Fort Wayne since debuting with the ballclub on May 30. Burke is batting .400 in his first 20 games in the Midwest League after seeing limited time earlier this season in Advanced-A, Double-A, and Triple-A.
The visitors added an additional run in the eighth and two final scores in the ninth. Daniel Watts (9-3) started for South Bend and lasted seven innings to earn his league-leading ninth victory of the season. The lefty limited Fort Wayne to the one run on only two hits, while striking out four.
The TinCaps stay at home to begin a new three-game series at Parkview Field against the West Michigan Whitecaps Sunday. Fort Wayne is set to send Bryan Rodriguez to the mound against West Michigan’s Endrys Briceno in a battle of right-handers, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
