Community Harvest Sends First Truck to Oklahoma for Tornado Relief
(May 25, 2013) – Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana has spent the week collecting food and cash donations for the Oklahoma Tornado Disaster relief efforts. At about 9:00 A.M. Friday, May 24, the first semi pulled away from the loading dock on its way west 1,000 miles to Oklahoma City, filled with pallets stacked two high, loaded with nutritious snack foods and ready to eat meals. Over 21,000 pounds and $1,865 was donated in this initial delivery to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for disaster relief efforts.
“We have collected more than one truck load and if more donations come in we will continue offering it to OKC,” said Jane Avery, executive director at Community Harvest Food Bank. “It was important to get this load out the door quickly because they need it so badly right now. Their recovery will take a very long time. The donations from this generous community is something we can all take pride in. It says so much about the giving spirit of those living in northeast Indiana. The leader of Boy Scout Troop #122 in Warren who wanted to teach his scouts about the power of giving, dedicated radio listeners, enthusiastic employee groups who donated their “Jeans Day” proceeds, and caring individuals fill our donor list of good, compassionate and generous folks who want to help in whatever way they can, said Avery.”
While Community Harvest will continue to accept donations that come in, the best bet is financial contributions which will work anytime and allows responders to purchase exactly what they need, when they need it. Checks can be made out to Community Harvest with “OK Tornado Relief” in the memo line and mailed or dropped by the food bank or contributions can be made online at Communityharvest.org. Click the “Donate” button on the homepage under the tornado relief information. Upon entering the donation information a second donation review page will display a place for “special instructions.” Enter “OK Tornado Relief” in that area.
