News release from the TinCaps:
Silver Hawks Sweep TinCaps
(May 24, 2013) – The TinCaps fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks, 7-3, on Friday night at Parkview Field. With the loss, Fort Wayne was swept in a four-game series at home for the first time since August 10-13, 2006 against Beloit.
Things got off to a rocky start for the TinCaps when the Silver Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. Fort Wayne (25-21) starter Ruben Mejia managed to limit first-place South Bend (29-16) to just one in the first, but things wouldn’t get any easier. Roidany Aguila hit a solo home run in the second to increase the visitors’ lead to 2-0. Mejia then couldn’t escape the third inning before he allowed three more runs and the Silver Hawks expanded their lead to 5-0. The right-hander exited the game after 2 and 2/3 innings, having surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks.
The TinCaps, who scored two runs in the first three games of the series, showed some signs of life in the third. Corey Adamson reached on an error and Alberth Martinez doubled to set the stage for a Gabriel Quintana RBI-single that made it 3-1. Two innings later in the fifth, Quintana came up with Adamson at third and Maxx Tissenbaum at first. The third baseman ripped a double down the left-field line to cut Fort Wayne’s deficit to 5-3. However, that was close as the home team would get.
The TinCaps went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, as they left nine runners on base. Silver Hawks starter Jesse Darrah lasted seven innings to earn the win. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter, while scattering three runs (one earned) on seven hits. South Bend tacked on two more runs charged to Fort Wayne reliever Matt Chabot in the sixth to produce the final score, 7-3.
Next up, the TinCaps head south to Bowling Green, KY, for a three-game set at the Hot Rods. The opener on Saturday night is set to start at 8:05. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
