News release from the City of Fort Wayne:
City Utilities Celebrates Earth Day at Camp Scott Wetlands
(April 25, 2013) – Although Earth Day is officially observed on April 22, Fort Wayne City Utilities invites visitors to continue the celebration at the Camp Scott Wetlands on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. A variety of activities are planned and the event will be a great opportunity for visitors to take some early spring photos. The wetlands site is located at 3615 Oxford Street.
The Camp Scott wetlands was built by City Utilities to store and treat stormwater runoff from several neighborhoods around McMillen Park. Water is collected from the neighborhoods in storm sewers and is then pumped to the wetlands from a large holding tank under the park. Rainwater enters the wetlands through a constructed waterfall. It passes through a wetland area them flows into a large pond at the back of the 29-acre site.
The site is home to wildlife including frogs and turtles, ducks, geese, native songbirds and migrating waterfowl such as green herons and egrets.
The Earth Day event on April 27 will feature the following:
- Visitors can take photos to enter in City Utilities’ Camp Scott Earth Day photo contest. Entry forms and rules will be available at the event.
- City Utilities staff will be demonstrating some basic water quality testing techniques and information will be available to help property owners implement lawn care practices that will help protect water quality.
- Visitors will be encouraged to make a nature journal while at the event and begin to regularly observe and write about nature.
- All children will receive a packet of wetland-related activities to take home. (All children must be accompanied by an adult.)
- Light refreshments will be provided.
Future events at Camp Scott are planned for June, September and October. More information is available at www.cityoffortwayne.org/utilities/resources/camp-scott-wetlands.
