Best-Selling Author Last Speaker of 2012-13 Omnibus Season
(April 11, 2013) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW) Omnibus Lecture Series presents journalist and author Susan Orlean and “My Encounters with Extraordinary People,” Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhinehart Music Center. This is the last lecture of the 2012-13 Omnibus season. The event is open to the public; however, free tickets are required.
One of the most creative literary journalists of today, Susan Orlean is the author of the best-selling book The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Oscar-winning movie Adaptation. Her latest work, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and The Legend, tells the story of Rin Tin Tin’s journey from orphaned puppy to movie star and international icon.
Orlean was a staff writer for The New Yorker and an editor at Rolling Stone and Vogue, where she wrote about numerous figures in both the music and fashion industries. She has contributed to Esquire, Smithsonian, New York Times Magazine, and many other publications.
Orlean has written several books, including My Kind of Place: Travel Stories from a Woman Who’s Been Everywhere, The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup: My Encounters with Ordinary People, Red Sox and Blue Fish, Saturday Night, Lazy Little Loafers, and The Orchid Thief, a narrative about orchid poachers in Florida. Orlean teaches creative writing at New York University and has been a writer-in-residence at several other universities.
Free tickets are required for all Omnibus Lectures. Tickets may be obtained IN PERSON at the Larson Box Office in the Gates Athletics Center, 12:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; ONLINE at ipfw.edu/box-office, with a convenience fee of $1; or DAY OF EVENT in the Rhinehart Music Center one hour before the lecture if seats remain. Tickets will be available three weeks prior to each event.
The Omnibus Lecture Series has been supported by the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation since 1995. The 2012-13 season media sponsors are WANE-TV NewsChannel 15 and Northeast Indiana Public Radio.
Each lecture will be held on the IPFW campus in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center’s 1,600-seat Auer Performance Hall. Doors open one hour before the each lecture. Campus parking is free and convenient. A 1,000-space parking garage is located in the Fine Arts Plaza to serve Omnibus audiences. Patrons are advised to allow ample time for traffic
and parking, as the series and other events on campus may draw large crowds.The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center is located on the north end of campus in the arts plaza next to the Ernest E. Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building, and behind the Medical Education Center.
