Spring Clean: Residents asked to Pitch-In, Sweep-Up
Volunteers Sought to Keep City BeautifulResidents are encouraged to take part in this year’s Great American Cleanup on May 18, 2013.
The City is looking for volunteers and groups of all ages to take part in the clean-up of litter and debris from Fort Wayne’s neighborhoods, parks, roadways, trails and riverbanks. In order to accommodate participants with an event tee-shirt, gloves, and trash bags, the City is asking residents to pre-register by calling 311 or by accessing the event website at https://www.cityoffortwayne.org/great-american-clean-up.html.
“The Great American Cleanup is about making a difference and taking pride in your community,” Mayor Tom Henry said. “I greatly admire the tremendous effort our groups and residents make each year to beautify our City. Last year, with the help of nearly 5,000 volunteers, we picked up trash, removed graffiti and planted flowers and gardens. I encourage everyone to participate in this year’s effort.”
The Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest beautification and community improvement effort. Nationwide, there were more than four million volunteers last year. Fort Wayne’s clean-up efforts focus on neighborhoods, vacant lots, trails and greenways, graffiti removal, streets and roads, and our rivers. The event provides a great opportunity for neighborhood associations, church groups, service organizations, youth groups, schools, and all residents to make a difference in their community.
Results from 2012:
- 4579 volunteers contributed 13,758 hours to cleaning up our City in this one day event! This is what they accomplished!
- 189,800 pounds of litter & debris was collected
- 45 miles of roads, streets & highways were cleaned or beautified
- 1,300 acres of parks & public lands were cleaned
- 20 miles of hiking, biking & nature trails cleaned
- 3 acres of wetlands cleaned & improved
- 19 miles of river banks cleaned
