Stutzman to President Obama: Put Aside Fear Mongering and Find Sensible Cuts to Government Waste
Washington, D.C. (February 25, 2013) – U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman today criticized the White House’s latest effort to create fear and confusion by releasing a state-by-state report that offers the false choice between tax hikes and harmful cuts the President demanded. “With only four days until President Obama’s across-the-board cuts to security priorities take effect, the White House is intentionally misleading Hoosiers with the false choice between tax hikes to fuel more runaway spending or hurtful reductions to our national security. Yesterday’s ‘report’ shows that President Obama is willing to exact the maximum pain on our national defense until he gets what he wants—higher taxes on Hoosiers. Taxpayers deserve better than President Obama’s fear tactics.
“I voted against President Obama’s sequester in 2011 because I don’t believe politicians should saddle our armed services with Washington’s failures. House Republicans have voted twice to replace President Obama’s sequester with cuts to real waste. Unfortunately, while the President calls for another oppressive tax hike, the Democrat-controlled Senate is blocking common sense solutions.
“Hoosiers understand that the IRS can’t tax Washington out of its spending mess. It’s time for President Obama to end his calls for tax hikes, put aside the fear mongering, and join House Republicans in agreeing to sensible cuts to government waste.”

Background:
- According to Washington Post Associate Editor Bob Woodward, the idea for the sequester was born in the White House and first suggested by President Obama’s Chief of Staff (then Director of Office of Management and Budget) Jack Lew.
- The sequester was included in the final version of the Budget Control Act of 2011 which passed despite Congressman Stutzman’s opposition by a 269-161 vote and was signed by the President.
- House Republicans passed H.R. 5652, and Congressman Stutzman voted for, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act, on May 10, 2012. The bill would replace the President’s sequester with common-sense reforms that reduce spending.
- House Republicans passed H.R. 6684, and Congressman Stutzman voted for, the Spending Reduction Act, on December 20, 2012. The legislation adopts common-sense reforms that eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending programs.
