Stutzman: “The President is Waging a National Fear Campaign Against Defense Cuts He Proposed”
(Washington, D.C. – February 8, 2013) – U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman issued the following statement today after the Wall Street Journal reported the White House’s intention to “defer to Congress” on how to best avoid the sequester:
“The President is waging a national fear campaign against defense cuts he proposed but refuses to work with Congress to sensibly replace them. Trying to have it both ways is hardly a profile in leadership. The sequester was the White House’s idea. House Republicans have passed legislation twice to avoid it by cutting real government waste. Unfortunately, the President is abdicating his responsibility by refusing to consider solutions and instead campaigning against House Republicans.”
“It’s time for the President to get serious about addressing our nation’s $16 trillion debt by cutting spending in a responsible way.”
Background:
- According to Washington Post Associate Editor Bob Woodward, the idea for the sequester was born in the White House and first suggested by President Obama’s chief-of-staff (then Director of Office of Management and Budget) Jack Lew.
- House Republicans passed H.R. 5652, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act, on May 10, 2012. The bill would replace the President’s sequester with common-sense reforms that reduce spending.
- House Republicans passed H.R. 6684, the Spending Reduction Act, on December 20, 2012. The legislation adopts common-sense reforms that eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending programs.
