Spring Street Bridge Opening Delayed to Oct. 5
Extension granted for construction of sidewalk connection

(August 29, 2012) — The opening of the Spring Street Bridge near the University of St. Francis campus has been pushed back to October 5, the Allen County Highway Department announced today.

The one week extension was requested by Primco, Inc., the project contractor, in order to make necessary changes in a sidewalk connection from the northwest corner of the bridge to Sprunger Street which will meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The changes will add around $36,000 to the cost of the project, but the total amount spent is still expected to be just under the $2.27 million bid submitted by Primco. 80 percent of the funding is coming from the federal government.

The County Highway Department is partnering with the City of Fort Wayne to rehabilitate the bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad; reconstruct and widen Spring Street from Sprunger Avenue to Steup Avenue to provide turn lanes; signalize the intersection of Leesburg Road and Spring Street; install sidewalks along each side of the street and other related roadway work.
