IPFW Announces 2012-2013 Omnibus Lecture Season
(August 22, 2012) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW) Omnibus Lecture Series, in its 18th year, offers six lectures for the 2012-2013 season that are dedicated to presenting diverse ideas through respected speakers to northeast Indiana. Since 1995 all lectures have been free and open to the public. The season lineup includes Mia Farrow, Jeffrey Toobin, Jon Meacham, Naomi Tutu, Grant Imahara, and Susan Orlean. Free tickets for the lectures may be picked up in person, obtained online, or at the event if tickets remain available.

“With Knowledge Comes Responsibility: The Darfur Crisis”
Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012Mia Farrow gained national attention in her role in the television classic Peyton Place. Farrow went on to star in more than 40 movies, including Rosemary’s Baby, The Great Gatsby, and Hannah and Her Sisters. Farrow has devoted her life to humanitarian causes. She is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has fought to eradicate polio. Her latest effort raises awareness of the genocide occurring in Darfur, Chad, and the Central African Republic.

He has written articles on such subjects as the Bernie Madoff scandal, the case of Roman Polanski, and profiles of Justices Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, John Paul Stevens, and Chief Justice John Roberts. Toobin is an unbiased expert on all matters of American law, politics, and media.

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012Jon Meacham is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Lion and Franklin and Winston, former editor of Newsweek, and executive vice president and executive editor at Random House Publishing. Meacham focuses on acquiring works of history, religion, and biography, and advising on a broad array of publishing opportunities, including digital initiatives. His latest book, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, intimately depicts the life of one of America’s most prominent founding fathers. Meacham has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Slate, and The Los Angeles Times Book Review.
Naomi Tutu, Human Rights Advocate
“Hard Conversations: Talking About Race and Racism”
Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013Naomi Tutu is a lifetime advocate of human rights. Daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu, she was born in apartheid South Africa, but later lived in Lesotho, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Tutu served as a development consultant in West Africa and coordinated programs for race and gender awareness at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. She is a consultant to two human rights organizations, the Spiritual Alliance to Stop Intimate Violence (SASIV) and the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (PHSSA). Tutu has led workshops for conflict resolution and issues of race and racism, as well as women’s retreats through her organization, Sister Sojourner.
Grant Imahara, Robotics Engineer

Monday, March 25, 2013Before becoming a mythbuster on the popular Discovery Channel TV science program, Mythbusters, Grant Imahara was an animatronics engineer and modelmaker for George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic, where he specialized in electronics and radio control. His film credits include Star Wars, The Matrix, Jurassic Park, and Terminator. Imahara has worked closely with R2-D2 units for the Star Wars films and is one of only three official R2-D2 operators in the United States. He also developed circuitry for the iconic Energizer Bunny. Kickin’ Bot: An Illustrated Guide to Building Combat Robots, Imahara’s first book, was released in 2003. It is regarded by many robot-building enthusiasts as the bible for combat robotics.
Susan Orlean, Journalist and Author
“My Encounters with Extraordinary People”
Thursday, April 18, 2013Susan Orlean is the author of the best-selling book, The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Oscar-winning movie, Adaptation. Her latest work, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and The Legend, tells the story of Rin Tin Tin’s journey from orphaned puppy to movie star and international icon. Orlean was a staff writer for The New Yorker and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and Vogue. She has contributed to Esquire, Smithsonian, and New York Times Magazine. Orlean teaches creative writing at New York University and has been a writer-in-residence at several other universities.
Free tickets are required for all Omnibus Lectures. Tickets may be obtained IN PERSON at the Larson Box Office in the Gates Athletic
Center, 12:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; ONLINE at ipfw.edu/box-office, and a convenience fee of $1 will be charged; or DAY OF EVENT in the Rhinehart Music Center one hour before the lecture, if seats remain. Tickets will be available three weeks prior to each event.The Omnibus Lecture Series has been supported by the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation since 1995. The 2012-13 season media sponsors are WANE-TV NewsChannel 15 and Northeast Indiana Public Radio.
Each lecture will be held on the IPFW campus in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center’s 1,600-seat Auer Performance Hall. Doors open one hour before the each lecture. Campus parking is free and convenient. A new 1,000-space parking garage is located in the Fine Arts Plaza to serve Omnibus audiences. Patrons are advised to allow ample time for traffic and parking, as the series and other events on campus may draw large crowds.
The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center is located on the north end of campus in the arts plaza next to the Ernest E. Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building, and behind the Medical Education Center.
