Students Learn to Build Submersibles at Sea Perch Experience at IPFW
(July 2, 2012) – Middle and high school students will be putting their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills to the test next month in the Sea Perch Experience at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). More than 40 students will take part in the four-day outreach initiative of the IPFW STEM Council, Monday through Thursday, July 9 to 12, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The students will work in teams of three to four students to build Sea Perch submersibles which are a simple, remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), made from PVC pipe and other inexpensive, easily available materials. Once the student teams have built their ROVs they will take part in a competition that involves an obstacle course and a presentation. The competition will take place Thursday, July 12, at the Renaissance Pointe Family YMCA, located at 2323 Bowser Avenue in Fort Wayne.
The instructors for the Sea Perch Experience are Jeff Nowak, associate professor and director of the NISTEM Educational Resource Center, and Jake Millspaw, assistant professor of physics.
The Sea Perch Experience is sponsored by the IPFW Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA), the Departments of Physics and Mathematics, the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science, the Office of Research and External Support, and the Renaissance Pointe Family YMCA.
