IPFW Sculpture with PurposeTM to be Flagship of 50th Anniversary Celebration
(May 23, 2012) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), northeast Indiana’s largest public university, will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the 2013-14 academic year. During its 50th anniversary celebration, IPFW embarks on the path to permanently enhance the visual landscape of its campus and community.
Sculpture with PurposeTM—IPFW’s flagship 50th project—will enrich Fort Wayne with sculptural bike racks. These 50 sculptures will engage the entire community, as they will be installed widely throughout our area, based on sponsorship and visibility. Through innovative designs specifically crafted to accommodate bicycle parking, Sculpture with Purpose encourages the benefits of cycling while enriching the streets with art for everyone to enjoy.
IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell noted, “All the accomplishments of our university’s past have set the stage for our 50th anniversary. And even though we could not be prouder about our past, IPFW has always been about the future, about momentum, and about ensuring our region remains vital. In fact, you could say that since 1964, moving forward together truly has defined who we are as a university and a community.”
Irene Walters, executive director of University Relations and Communications said, “The Mastodons on Parade public art initiative in 2004 was a huge success, but the sculptures’ placement in downtown Fort Wayne was temporary. These sculptural bike racks will be permanently placed within our community and we hope this initiative will serve as a catalyst to more public art projects.”
The sculptural bike racks will come in three sizes and will be created by local and national artists of all disciplines, who will be invited to submit design ideas that will then go through a juried selection process beginning this September. The artists will have only two requirements for their pieces: each must contain the IPFW triangle and at least one bike must be able to be attached to the sculpture with a U-lock.
Area schools will be invited to take part in the IPFW Sculpture with Purpose School Bicycle Art Program. Participating schools will be given a recycled bike that students will turn into art. Those bikes will then be attached to the bike rack sculptures for the official unveiling in May 2014.
The initiative was announced at a news conference this morning, (Wednesday, May 23, 2012), during which Lincoln Financial Group was announced as the IPFW Sculpture with Purpose title sponsor.
Ruth Stone, the initiative’s project manager, noted five other companies have already signed on as Decade sponsors: Franklin Electric, Indiana Michigan Power, Design Collaborative, SDI, and Sweetwater; while Visit Fort Wayne and the IPFW Alumni Association have come on board as Celebration level sponsors. A third level of sponsorship, Commemorative, is also available. IPFW scholarships for students in need of financial assistance will be awarded with a portion of the funds raised.
