Voting: A Right and A Privilege to be Featured at UC2 Programs
What would this country be like if Congress had not passed and President Lyndon B. Johnson had not signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965? You can learn more about that pivotal time in American history and honor the Voting Rights Act, Wednesday, October 26, and Saturday, October 29, at the next UC2 programs. The Wednesday event begins at noon in the Walb Union Ballroom; Saturday’s event begins at 10 a.m. in the Rhinehart Recital Hall in the Rhinehart Music Center.
Each event will begin with the showing of a 22-minute video of President Johnson’s March 1965 speech in which he urges Congress to
pass a voting rights bill. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion about the Act, featuring experts from the College of Arts and Sciences faculty and the community. The panelists include:
- Andrew Downs, assistant professor of political science and director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics
- David Schuster, assistant professor of history (Wednesday panel only)
- Charles Redd, community activist and former Fort Wayne City Council member
- Rubin Brown, African American History Museum
Lyndsey Norwood, an IPFW student, will provide musical entertainment at Saturday’s event.
