Councilwoman Goldner proposes a balanced budget without raising taxes

Today, Councilwoman Karen Goldner proposed amending the City of Fort Wayne’s 2012 Budget to hold the property tax levy flat at the 2011 level. This proposal would use reserves to balance the budget rather than raising property taxes. Councilwoman Goldner has presented her proposal to Mayor Tom Henry and his administration, and they have fully endorsed the amendment.

“My proposal will balance the budget by using a modest amount of our cash reserves rather than raising taxes,” said Councilwoman Goldner. “Over the last three years, I’ve worked with Mayor Henry’s administration to keep our city finances strong, and thanks to our conservative budgeting, our city is in the position to protect residents from tax increases during these tough economic times.”

“I fully support Councilwoman Goldner’s proposal to balance our budget,” said Mayor Tom Henry. “Because we’ve done more with less and come in under budget every year, Fort Wayne has a very healthy cash reserve we can rely on. Councilwoman Goldner made a very convincing case that now was the time to use a small part of this reserve in order to hold taxes flat. I’m happy to support her proposal, and I’m looking forward to it being adopted by the City Council.”

Councilwoman Goldner will present her proposal during the City Council’s budget meetings over the coming weeks.

  1. Everybody is a conservative in an election year!! Got pretty snippy when asked how much was in cash reserve…you’d think she would know this before making the proposal..
