Cyclists Gather in Fort Wayne for Inaugural Ride to Remember on 9/11

(August 24, 2011) – Cyclists will gather in Fort Wayne for a bicycle tour to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. The inaugural Ride to Remember, presented by Men of Steel Racing and Summit City Bicycles & Fitness, will begin and end at the Public Safety Academy on Sunday, September 11.

“We will never forget the men and women who lost their lives ten years ago on 9/11. It’s a day that we all reflect on often. The Public Safety Academy of course serves many firefighters and first responders who feel a special bond with the firefighters and public safety officials that lost their lives on 9/11. It’s appropriate that this commemorative event starts at the Public Safety Academy — and how great that they can utilize our fantastic trail system, ” said Loren Robertson, Executive Director of the PSA.

The Ride to Remember offers three different routes for cyclists of various abilities. There will be a 10-mile family greenway ride, a 30-mile flat loop to Monroeville through scenic farmlands of Allen County, and a 62-mile loop along the Indiana/Ohio state line.

Cost is $20 per family for the greenway ride and $25 per person for the longer routes. Your entry fee includes snacks and drinks at designated stops. Riders can also pre-order a commemorative t-shirt for $15. The shirt depicts a cyclist with an American flag and the twin towers incorporated into a bicycle wheel.

“We’ve received tremendous support from area firefighters and public safety officials whenever we put on our races and this is our way of saying thank you, ” said John Martin, Tour Director of Men of Steel Racing, the cycling club that puts on the annual Parkview Cycling Festival.

The inaugural Ride to Remember benefits the Public Safety Academy, Woodburn and Monroeville firefighters, Wounded Warriors and Share the Road.
