Bids Opened for CCB Asbestos Abatement Project
Commissioners expected to award contract March 11

(March 2, 2011) – Four companies submitted bids today to remove asbestos-containing materials from the City-County Building as part of a major renovation project.

The bids will be evaluated by environmental consultant ACM Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. and a recommendation is expected to be presented to the Allen County Board of Commissioners at its March 11 legislative session.

The companies submitting proposals and their base bids were:

[li]Specialty Systems, Inc., Indianapolis, $498,000;[/li]
[li]Environmental Management Specialists, Inc., Huntertown, $902,539;[/li]
[li]Environmental Assurance Co., Inc., Indianapolis, $972,700; and[/li]
[li]Midwest Construction Services, LLC, St. John, Indiana, $1,015,000[/li]
[/list]

Each company also submitted bids for five additional alternatives to the base project. Bids on the actual renovation of the County-owned City-County Building will be opened tomorrow. The work is expected to start later in the spring once renovation of the City-owned building at 200 East Berry Street is finished.

The abatement of asbestos-containing materials will involve areas of the CCB directly affected by the renovation project. Those materials include floor tile and adhesive, transite wall panels, fireproofing material and thermal system insulation.

Recent air sample results of the 40-year-old City-County Building were below permissible exposure limits for asbestos. While the asbestos-containing materials in the building are left undisturbed, they pose no health threat to employees or visitors.
