Ivy Tech Community College surpasses 120,000 students in a term

Press release from Ivy Tech Community College:

Ivy Tech Community College Surpasses 120,000 Students in a Term

(INDIANAPOLIS, January 26, 2011) – Ivy Tech Community College continues to post record enrollment numbers with 120,574 students enrolled statewide for spring classes. It marks the first time that the school has surpassed 120,000 students in a single term and is over 1,500 more students than last spring term.

“Ivy Tech’s primary focus continues to be providing affordable, open-access education throughout the state, and the phenomenal growth we’ve seen is because of the flexibility and the support we provide to our students. We continue to serve a diverse group of students. We have seen an increase in the number of students making Ivy Tech their first choice out of high school and we are the school for adult learners in Indiana. Both groups of students are important to the future of our state,” said President Thomas J. Snyder. “We are committed to helping students achieve their educational goals whether that is a short term certificate, a two-year degree or the attainment of credits that later transfer to one of our four-year partners.”

The College saw over 87,000 returning students this spring while welcoming nearly 17,700 new students to the College this term. A record number of dual credit students are also part of the 120,000 students as nearly 15,000 high school students are currently taking dual credit courses with Ivy Tech. And in total just under 65 percent of Ivy Tech students are considered part-time students.

“We are again feeling some capacity strains around the state having increased by over 50,000 students since just 2007. This influx of students to the community college will help in our efforts to reach the goals set forth by Lumina Foundation to increase the percentage of Americans who hold high-quality degrees, credentials and certificates to 60 percent by 2025. Ivy Tech is going to be the key to achieving this goal. Managing our space constraints will make it challenging for the College,” Snyder said.

The largest of the College’s 30-degree granting locations is the Central Indiana region (Indianapolis). The region serves over 32,000 students a year, making it the third largest undergraduate campus in the state, behind only Indiana University-Bloomington and Purdue University-West Lafayette. This current term that region enrolled an all-time high of nearly 26,200 students.

Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s largest public postsecondary institution and the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college system serving nearly 200,000 students annually. Ivy Tech has campuses throughout Indiana. It serves as the state’s engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.
