Press release from The Huff:
Record field for The Huff 50k Trail Run
(December 18, 2010) – The HUFF 50K Trail Run had a record number of entrants at the start line on Saturday, December 18th, at the J. Edward Roush Lake in Huntington, Indiana.
HUFF Race Director Mitch Harper said entrants came from 15 different states and provinces including Oregon, Florida, California, New York, New Jersey and Ontario. Harper was the founder of the event and has been the race director each year since its inception.
The number of individuals doing the full 50K distance is the greatest number in the 14 years since The HUFF’s founding in 1997. The HUFF 50K will likely be in the top 15 to top 20 largest ultramarathons in North America for 2010.
The HUFF 50K was the largest new ultramarathon in North America for 1997. It has also been the USA Track & Field National 50K Trail Championship in the past.
Runners started with a cannon blast signalling the start of the race at 8 AM at the Kil-So-Quah Campground at Roush Lake. Runners of the full distance of nearly 32 miles ran three loops of the Kekionga Trail around Roush Lake. Aid stations at the Start/Finish, at the 4 Mile mark and the 7.5 mile mark kept the runners fed, hydrated and safe.
Time To Run timing services of Columbia City provided chip timing for the event.
Harper said the event continues to provide a substantial boost in hospitality services in Huntington County and Northeast Indiana and is a great example of the variety of sports tourism in the area. Harper said he was glad that The HUFF has been providing that example since 1997.
